Voice talent want to please you. They really, really want to do a good job. You just have to guide them and be open and supportive to what they give you. Here is a scenario of what you might say and what talent hears. First bad, then good.
| What you say: | What the talent hears: |
|---|---|
| Stop! | What the hell were you thinking? |
| I want more energy. | You sound like you just woke up. |
| That’s not quite it. | We can hire someone else, can’t you get it? |
On the other hand you could try:
| What you say: | What the talent hears: |
|---|---|
| Wow, hadn’t thought of that. OK let’s try an adjustment. | I’m at least in the area, ok I can do this. |
| Talk to your friend. | Oh, not announcer. OK I’ll picture Jeff. |
Anyway you get the picture. Try to give talent organic direction so they can come up with a read on their own. It will be more believeable.
