TAG | Coaching voice over talent

To expand a bit on our last blog, here is a really great way to guide talent to a very believeable read. First, be open to interpretation. If you have it in your head a certain way, it might end up sounding contrived unless you cast someone you know will give you that exact read.

Ask the talent to pick an imaginary friend they know to talk to. Then ask them to pick an environment. If the read requires energy, they might pick a lively place – the mall or a bar. Finally, choose a reason to be relating the information to the friend (or motivation.) If you really want conversational, you might invent a sentence or two before the copy starts to help it sound like you are actually eavesdropping on a conversation. (Of course the extra imaginary copy can be edited out.)

Adjustments can be made depending on the project. Just remember: don’t focus on the end result. Focus on the front end and good creative input and be open to the possibilities.
